    Backup server!

Friday, May 16, 2008, 10:16 AM CST [General]

I bought a NAS to be used as a low power backup server at my house

It's not the most fully featured NAS (Qnap or Synology win there), nor is it the cheapest (Buffalo, but the Pro Duo is too slow from everything I've read).  It does have RAID 1 and comes with backup software.  My original plan was to find a NAS that I could put a full linux distro on (even if I have to build my own kernel -- no big deal, I'm Ex-Gentoo) and then put on BackupPC, an amazing, free rsync backup software.  Also, it uses 15 W while idle and 25 W while in use -> awesome.

It seems like the best one for getting the best performance to price ratio

This site made it easy to compare different NAS units as they've reviewed  bunch:

I picked it up from amazon for $180 shipped (before a $20 rebate)

It doesn't come with the drives, but I have two 500 GB SATA drives that I'm not really using at the moment.
