It is safe to say that I have caught Olympic Fever this weekend. I was not very thrilled in the weeks leading up to the summer olympics, mainly because they are being held in China, I don't think that they should be rewarded for their atrocious record of human rights.
After watching the most amazing opening ceremony I have ever seen (it featured 15000 individual cast members), I got the itch to watch what was going down in Little China. I woke up Saturday morning and watched Dressage, and equestrian art, it was actually entertaining to see such beautiful horses and talented riders. Then watched replays of Beach Volleyball, Sabre Fencing, and some swimming Prelims. Sunday I made sure to tune in primetime because Michael Phelps was swimming in his first of eight events and I cannot miss watching history being made. Phelps of course set a record in his first event and won gold.
Sunday I made sure to watch the Men's Basketball game, nothing is better than watching China get beat down. Noted guests at the game included: Former President Bush, current President Bush, Chinese "President" Hu Jintao, the chinese minister on foreign relations, and Henry Kissinger of all people (Nixon's Secretary of State). Then Sunday evening I watched some competitive swimming, the Bush family was present at the Water Cube as well.
The last race was a 400m Free Relay and the French team was expected to dominate the event. The race started off very well with the first two Americans (including Phelps) remaining competitive with the French team, however in the third leg the American swimmer was down .82 seconds to the French, I thought the race was over. However in a stunning turn of events the Anchor swimmer for the American team was able to overcome a .62s split in the final 50m and defeat the French swimmer by .08s. Five teams beat the WR set by the US team in the prelims, and the US team set a new WR. This moment was the best Olympic moment I have ever seen/experienced in all my years.
President Bush is the first US president to attend an Olympic games on foreign soil, isn't that hard to believe? I must say that I have been very impressed with him these past few days as he attended the Opening Ceremony, played beach volleyball with Walsh/Treanor, went to several swimming events, and went to both the US Mens and Womens Basketball games against China. He also gave a very good interview with Bob Costas of all people, reminding the American people that it is important we strive to maintain good relations with the Chinese people and hope to influence the further "opening up" of China. I was very impressed with Bush for saying those things and even mentioning his various meetings with Putin and Hu Jintao.
